School Founders
Susan Le Vay and Ruth Padgett, mothers of boys with autism, have long recognized the need for a school designed specifically for middle and high school children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and other learning differences. They envisioned a staff of qualified and dedicated educators using effective practices in special education; a small community of students learning daily life and social skills; and a curriculum that would meet the needs of those students. They chose a name that reflects their mission to help students achieve their highest level of independence and academic success, "The Independence Academy."
